Give Me Characters That Are Real

This poem was selected as a top ten winner in Creative Communications' spring 2022 contest. View here

We tell kids they can be anything

While showing them characters

Who are everything,

Who are fake.

It's impossible not to see

The differences between them and me.

Can I be anything,

Or just them?

Give me a case that Nancy Drew can't solve.

Give me a day when Barbie's hair looks like our dolls'.

Give me an issue that causes the Boxcar Children to fight.

Give me something true, give me some light.

Dreams don't simply come true.

Blessings don't just wait for you.

You can be anything,

But you have to try.

You have to fail sometimes.

Give me characters who are real,

Who understand the way I feel,

Characters who know what it feels like to fall,

Who can be anything despite it all.

Mirror, mirror on the wall,

Why am I afraid to fall?

Mirror, mirror in my dream,

How come you don’t look like me?

Hundred versions of myself,

Each and every one needs help.

I’m scared of what tomorrow brings.

I know I can’t do everything.

I don’t want to waste my time,

Winter worries to lost sunshine.

Mirror, mirror, go away.

Don’t ruin me, don’t waste the day.

Mirrored wall breaking down,

I think at last I hit the ground.

Pages and pages

Besides what’s in my head

So many phrases

Plus all my words unsaid

I don’t know what to do

How do I organize my mind

Are my words even true

When the perfect one is so hard to find

I see the vague shapes of thoughts

Like silhouettes on the horizon

I move towards them but I’m lost

I can hardly turn my mind on

Just faded mists of dreams

Beyond the reach of language

Maybe I’ll just express with color beams

I’d better try before they turn beige

Cheeks red as cherries

Snow so white and pure

See the Christmas fairies

You'll be smiling for sure

They fly all around town

Singing far off key

Don't tell them to quiet down

I hope they'll come and visit me

They deck every haul

Every wreath they hang

They're having a jolly ball

As holiday songs are sang

Their lights are twinkling

Before every eye

The warm glow sets us dreaming

Deep into the night sky

Anxiety is an ugly monster,

Causing problems whatever you do,

Eating away at your happiness,

Eating away

At you.

Anxiety scares sensible thinking away.

It scares the mind, also,

Into worrying.

As a frightened horse is difficult to ride,

So an anxious mind is hard to control.

But it can be stopped!

Though it may seem to be impossible,

God can do anything,

He is in control,

And He loves to help His children.

All we must do is think of

And be thankful for

God and His many blessings.

It takes time and effort, but

God will help defeat that monster in your mind.
