I Love You

Sometimes, “I love you,”

Sounds like, “Don’t work too hard.”

Sometimes it sounds like,

“Let me help you.”

“Stay safe.”

“You look pretty today.”

“It’ll all be ok.”

“I like when you relax.”

“You’re my comfort.”

“Who else would I tell this to?”

“You’re such a big doof.”

“I love you,” sounds like

Wordless hugs,

Useless gifts,

Inside jokes,

Sugary snacks,

Warming hands,

Pats on the back.

“I love you,”

Is watching out for the other;

What makes them smile,

The needs they don’t voice.

No matter what,

Love is a choice.

It isn’t just the words we say,

But the things we do,

Every day.

Sometimes, “I love you,”

Sounds like something else.
